Invenias Power BI: Building Dashboards
Joins
If you select multiple datasets, Power BI will automatically add joins between similarly named fields.
Review these joins in theModal Viewtab verify they are correct. In some cases it can link ID fields incorrectly. (EX: linking People Record ID and User IDs.)
Transform Data
To use any of the date-based fields, you’ll need to transform the data. This can be done either when selecting the datasets or from the Table View.
-
Automatic Joins: When selecting multiple datasets, Power BI automatically creates joins between similarly named fields.
It's best practice to check the joins in the Modal View tab to ensure accuracy, as they can sometimes link ID fields incorrectly (e.g., People Record ID and User IDs).
- Transforming Date-Based Fields: To use date-based fields, you need to transform the data.
- To transform the data, you can do this either when selecting the datasets or by opening the Table View tab, selecting the dataset, and clicking Transform Data from the Home tab. Once the window opens, find the date-based column, select it, click the header, choose Data Type, and select Date/Time.
How to Transform Data
- In Power BI, navigate to the Table View tab.
- Click Transform.
- In the Transform view, you can further customise your dashboard using specific fields. For instance, to build a dashboard using a Date field, select the Date-based columns you require in your dashboard.
- After choosing your Date-based column, click Data Type and select Date/Time.
- Close the Transform view to apply your changes.
