Understanding Shift Differentials

Shift premiums incentivize employees to work less-desirable shifts. These higher rates are often referred to as Shift Differentials.

Example

Nicky Nurse is contracted to work a 13-week assignment at the hospital on Day Shift with the following contract details:

  • Day shift is 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM. This shift is paid at a rate of $50/hour billed at $100.
  • Night shift is 3:00 PM -11:00 PM. This shift has a shift differential of $5, totaling a pay rate of $55/hour and billed at $110.
  • Weekend Day shifts are hours worked any time on Saturday or Sunday. This shift has a shift differential of 1.5, totaling pay rate of $75/hour and billed at $150.

When Nicky works, they clock in and out. Not only do they work their scheduled hours as indicated, but occasionally they stay late to cover a few extra hours of the Night shift. Setting up Shift Differentials within Bullhorn OneTime & Labor allows them to automatically be paid the premiums for those extra hours worked during the Night shift.

Why You Want Them

The Shift Differentials feature allows you to customize your shifts so that the process for paying the correct rate for labor is automated. This automation reduces time and pay and bill errors.

  • Customization
    • Define the rates the worker makes based on shifts.
    • Establish guidelines for when each shift starts and ends.
  • Automation
    • The system determines the worker's shift, based on the guidelines you set and the worker's clock-in/clock-out.
    • The system assigns the correct rate, based on the definitions you set and the worker's clock-in/clock-out.
