Text Opt In / Opt Out and Unsubscribe FAQ
This article contains frequently asked questions and answers about how contacts and candidates can opt in, opt out and unsubscribe to texts.
When Bullhorn Automation sends an SMS using the Send Text step, the message is routed through TextUs (Bullhorn Messaging). SMS opt-out status is managed by TextUs, not by Bullhorn Automation. When a send is triggered, TextUs checks whether the recipient has opted out and suppresses the message if they have. Bullhorn Automation does not track or store SMS opt-out status.
How can I opt a contact or candidate out of SMS messages from Bullhorn Automation?
The easiest way to opt a contact or candidate out of SMS is to allow for them to opt themselves out. Here is a list of opt-out keywords that the recipient can send to your SMS number to automatically opt them out:
| Keyword | Opts Out From |
|---|---|
|
STOP |
Bullhorn Automation SMS, Bullhorn Messaging, TextUs Next |
|
CANCEL |
Bullhorn Automation SMS, Bullhorn Messaging, TextUs Next |
|
UNSUBSCRIBE |
Bullhorn Automation SMS, Bullhorn Messaging, TextUs Next |
|
END |
Bullhorn Messaging, TextUs Next |
|
QUIT |
Bullhorn Messaging, TextUs Next |
|
STOPALL |
Bullhorn Messaging, TextUs Next |
Only single-word messages will trigger the opt-out. For example, replying "STOP" will stop the contact or candidate from receiving messages from that number, but replying "STOP PLEASE" or "PLEASE CANCEL" will not.
We recommend including a version of the following in any text that you send: "Opt out by replying STOP".
How can I opt a contact or candidate back in to receiving SMS messages from Bullhorn Automation?

Does Bullhorn Automation track SMS opt-out status?
No. SMS opt-out status is managed directly by TextUs, which powers Bullhorn Messaging. When Automation triggers a Send Text step, TextUs checks the recipient's opt-out status before sending. If the contact has opted out, TextUs suppresses the message. Bullhorn Automation does not receive or store that opt-out status. If you need to view or manage SMS opt-out records, log in to your TextUs account.
