Chart Legends and Color Palette

Chart legends identify each data series in a chart by color. Analytics Dashboards automatically assigns colors from a built-in 32-color palette, so no configuration is needed.

What Is a Chart Legend?

A chart legend is a key that appears alongside a chart and identifies each data series by color. For example, if a chart displays placements for three different consultants, the legend shows which color represents each consultant. Legends appear automatically when a chart contains more than one data series.

Which Panels Display Chart Legends?

Chart legends appear in the following panel types:

Panel Chart Types Legend Displayed?
Small Data Grid Column, bar, line, scatter, area, histogram, combination Yes, when multiple data series are present
Trend Chart Line (time-series) Yes, when multiple metrics or ratios are displayed

How Colors Are Assigned

Analytics Dashboards automatically assigns colors to data series from a built-in 32-color palette. Colors are assigned in a fixed sequence each time a chart is rendered. The palette is designed so that all 32 colors are visually distinct, making it easier to read charts with a high number of data series.

Colors are assigned automatically. You cannot manually change the color of an individual data series.

The color palette applies consistently across all supported chart types in both light and dark themes. No configuration is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change the color of a data series in my chart?

Chart colors are assigned automatically by Analytics Dashboards and cannot be changed manually. The system assigns each data series a unique color from the 32-color palette in a fixed sequence. To influence which color a series receives, you can reorder the data series in your panel configuration, which changes the sequence in which colors are assigned.

Does the color palette change between light and dark themes?

No. The same 32-color palette is used in both light and dark themes. All colors in the palette are validated to render clearly in both themes.

Where is the chart legend displayed?

In the Small Data Grid, the legend appears below or alongside the chart depending on your panel layout. In the Trend Chart, the legend appears below the chart area. Legends display automatically when more than one data series is present and do not require any configuration.
